THE OBSTACLE IN OUR PATH

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand

Salam Madam Jumani...

My second reading material is about The Family Way by Tony Parsons. From my reading for about 1 weeks, I can summarize that this story was elegant and packed with emotion, smart and stylish.

I can browse that this book was about a family and the story was separated into other small sub-topics based on different siblings. *what am I trying to tell???*

To cut it short, his story show all too well how we muddle along in search of love and fulfilment, and when we fluff it.....sometimes that's just because it's easier.

He packed this story in one book about three sisters, three couples, total 6 men and women struggling with love and the meaning of family.

How To lose fat...

hai..
After the semester break, I realised that I already had increase my weight.
Oh, it's to shy. My friends and my mum always said" wanie, why you look so fat now?".
So, now I promise with myself to lose my weight.
I do some research on the internet, then I found some steps to lose fat.
Here, I want to share with all of you about this:

1. Eat a diet low in simple carbohydrates. Sugar, white flour, white rice, baked goods, sweets, pasta, and any other yummy thing made with simple carbohydrates will make losing fat and building muscle near impossible.
2. Eat whole grains, such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, oats, and any other whole grain food. Whole grains don't turn to sugar as fast in your blood stream, and take longer to digest.
3. Eat lean protein rather than high fat options. Turkey breast, white meat chicken without the skin, lean beef, and pork, and fish, are all great low fat protein choices. Beans and legumes, eggs, low fat cheese, and fat free milk are also great options.
4. Eat protein whenever you eat a carbohydrate. Healthy carbohydrates are fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Eating a protein, such as low fat cheese, or a slice of turkey breast, will make the digestive process take longer. This will enable you to eat less often and be satisfied.
5. Exercise!!It can't be stressed enough, EXERCISE builds muscle. When you eat a healthy diet, and exercise, you will be losing fat and building muscle. That is the key, EXERCISE regularly.
6. Drink at least six glasses of water a day, This will give your muscles fuel to burn the fat. It will also keep you hydrated in the process
So, I hope with this information will help my friends that have same problems with me.

The Client

A lawyer had successfully handled a difficult law case for a wealthy friend. Following the happy outcome of the case, the friend and client called on the lawyer, expressed his appreciation of his work and handed him a handsome Moroccan leather wallet.

The lawyer looked at the wallet in astonishment and handed it back with a sharp reminder that a wallet could not possible compensate him for his services. "My fee for that work," acidly snapped the attorney, "is five hundred dollars."
The client opened the wallet, removed a one-thousand dollar bill, replaced it with a five-hundred dollar bill and handed it back to the lawyer with a smile.

10 Diabetes Super Foods
-Readers Digest

1. Vegetables. Packed with powerhouse nutrients, vegetables are naturally low in calories, and they're full of fiber, so they're plenty filling. Loading your plate with vegetables will automatically mean you're eating fewer simple carbs (which raise blood sugar) and saturated fats (which increase insulin resistance). Aim to get four or five servings a day. (A serving is 1/2 cup canned or cooked vegetables or 1 cup raw vegetables.) Go easier on starchy vegetables -- including potatoes, corn, and peas -- which are higher in calories than other vegetables.

Above is part of the article that I have read. After finished reading this article, I found that it does not just suitable for diabetes patient but to everyone. It tells us about the best food to intake and how to take good care of ourselves. Besides, it also remind me the importance of health to a person. So, from now on, I know that I have to do the best thing for myself so that I can be healthy at all the time.

Here are five tips to help you improve your reading:

1. Styles of reading
2. Active reading
3. A tip for speeding up your active reading
4. Spotting authors' navigation aids
5. Words and vocabulary

1. Styles of reading

There are three styles of reading which we use in different situations:
Scanning: for a specific focus

The technique you use when you're looking up a name in the phone book: you move your eye quickly over the page to find particular words or phrases that are relevant to the task you're doing.

It's useful to scan parts of texts to see if they're going to be useful to you:

* the introduction or preface of a book
* the first or last paragraphs of chapters
* the concluding chapter of a book.

Skimming: for getting the gist of something

The technique you use when you're going through a newspaper or magazine: you read quickly to get the main points, and skip over the detail. It's useful to skim:

* to preview a passage before you read it in detail
* to refresh your understand of a passage after you've read it in detail.

Use skimming when you're trying to decide if a book in the library or bookshop is right for you.
Detailed reading: for extracting information accurately

Where you read every word, and work to learn from the text.

In this careful reading, you may find it helpful to skim first, to get a general idea, but then go back to read in detail. Use a dictionary to make sure you understand all the words used.

2. Active reading

When you're reading for your course, you need to make sure you're actively involved with the text. It's a waste of your time to just passively read, the way you'd read a thriller on holiday.

Always make notes to keep up your concentration and understanding.

Here are four tips for active reading.
Underlining and highlighting

Pick out what you think are the most important parts of what you are reading. Do this with your own copy of texts or on photocopies, not with borrowed books.
If you are a visual learner, you'll find it helpful to use different colours to highlight different aspects of what you're reading.
Note key words

Record the main headings as you read. Use one or two keywords for each point. When you don't want to mark the text, keep a folder of notes you make while reading.
Questions

Before you start reading something like an article, a chapter or a whole book, prepare for your reading by noting down questions you want the material to answer. While you're reading, note down questions which the author raises.
Summaries

Pause after you've read a section of text. Then:

1. put what you've read into your own words;
2. skim through the text and check how accurate your summary is and
3. fill in any gaps.

3. A tip for speeding up your active reading

You should learn a huge amount from your reading. If you read passively, without learning, you're wasting your time. So train your mind to learn.

Try the SQ3R technique. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recall and Review.
Survey

Gather the information you need to focus on the work and set goals:

* Read the title to help prepare for the subject
* Read the introduction or summary to see what the author thinks are the key points
* Notice the boldface headings to see what the structure is
* Notice any maps, graphs or charts. They are there for a purpose
* Notice the reading aids, italics, bold face, questions at the end of the chapter. They are all there to help you understand and remember.

Question

Help your mind to engage and concentrate. Your mind is engaged in learning when it is actively looking for answers to questions.

Try turning the boldface headings into questions you think the section should answer.
Read

Read the first section with your questions in mind. Look for the answers, and make up new questions if necessary.
Recall

After each section, stop and think back to your questions. See if you can answer them from memory. If not, take a look back at the text. Do this as often as you need to.
Review

Once you have finished the whole chapter, go back over all the questions from all the headings. See you if can still answer them. If not, look back and refresh your memory.

See also: Taking notes, Gathering information

4. Spotting authors' navigation aids

Learn to recognize sequence signals, for example:

"Three advantages of..." or "A number of methods are available..." leads you to expect several points to follow.

The first sentence of a paragraph will often indicate a sequence: "One important cause of..." followed by "Another important factor..." and so on, until "The final cause of..."

General points are often illustrated by particular examples, for example:

General: Birds' beaks are appropriately shaped for feeding.

Particular: Sparrows and other seed-eating birds have short, stubby beaks; wrens and other insect eaters have thin pointed beaks; herons and other fish hunters have long, sharp beaks for spearing their prey.

Whatever you are reading, be aware of the author's background. It is important to recognise the bias given to writing by a writer's political, religious, social background. Learn which newspapers and journals represent a particular standpoint.

5. Words and vocabulary

When you're a graduate people expect you to use a vocabulary which is wider than a school-leaver's. To expand your vocabulary:

Choose a large dictionary rather than one which is ‘compact' or ‘concise'. You want one which is big enough to define words clearly and helpfully (around 1,500 pages is a good size).

Avoid dictionaries which send you round in circles by just giving synonyms. A pocket dictionary might suggest: ‘impetuous = rash'.

A more comprehensive dictionary will tell you that impetuous means ‘rushing with force and violence', while another gives ‘liable to act without consideration', and add to your understanding by giving the derivation ‘14th century, from late Latin impetuous = violent'.

It will tell you that rash means ‘acting without due consideration or thought', and is derived from Old High German rasc = hurried.

So underlying these two similar words is the difference between violence and hurrying.

There are over 600,000 words in the Oxford English Dictionary; most of them have different meanings, (only a small proportion are synonyms).

Avoid dictionaries which send you round in circles by using very complicated language to define the term you're looking up, leaving you struggling to understand half a dozen new words.

Keep your dictionary at hand when you're studying. Look up unfamiliar words and work to understand what they mean.

Improve your vocabulary by reading widely.

If you haven't got your dictionary with you, note down words which you don't understand and look them up later.

11 Vegetable Plants to Start Indoors Before Spring
-Readers Digest

Healthy eating can begin at home! Start planting nutritious vegetables before the ground thaws with indoor gardening. Also, read The All-New Illustrated Guide to Gardening for in-depth organic planting methods.Plantings must be timed so that the clusters of small flower buds the plant produces can be harvested while the days remain cool. For best results, start the seeds indoors four to six weeks before the time to set out the seedlings--which you should calculate as two weeks before the date of the last expected frost.

Above are some of the articles that I have read. This is such a good idea to plant our own vegetables since we will be using less or no insecticides so, there is less chemical in our food. But, I think this does not always helpful because lowland in Malaysia is quite hot and it needs special care that only certified person can do. However, i know that it is always worth to try something good.

Assalamualaikum. I would like to summarize a drama which is popular among the students.

Teenage movie “KAMI” follows a group of five friends as they squeeze in as much fun and reckless abandonment on their road to self-discovery before entering a new stage in their lives – higher education.

Lynn, the most attractive character for me. She is a form five student who juggles her studies while helping her mother at their food stall and always hangs out with Ali, Abu, Sofie and Adi. Although they have made her part of their circle, Lynn is holding back a dark past from her buddies. Unknown to them Lynn and her mother had moved from their small town home to start afresh in the city away from a persistent small-time drug dealer, Boy, whom Lynn used to run errands for to gain extra pocket money.

To complicate matters, Lynn writes under the pseudonym Teka Teki for her own, well known fanzine called KAMI and has recently contributed a scathing write-up on Ali’s band in a local music magazine.

As she struggles to keep her secrets under wraps, Lynn soon learns that they are all hiding something from each other.

This drama give many values especially for students in facing the world in the right way.

One Family's Journey From Loss to a New Life
-Readers Digest

I was walking through the orphanage filled with tiny children and came upon a girl about two months old. She was wailing, and I thought my eardrums would burst. It seemed she was crying from hunger, but as I picked her up and felt her heaviness, I wondered if something more was behind her tears, a sadness, maybe, at having been left there.

Looking at her, I thought, I know exactly how you feel.

As I held her tight to my heart, I felt compassion, something I hadn't felt since my 15-year-old son, Jantsen, died of an undetected heart ailment several months earlier. The sadness and anger I'd experienced had me believing that nobody could feel as bad as I did. I would walk the earth under a thick cloud for the rest of my life; I had the corner on suffering.

The above article is really inspiring. It tells us that we are not the only person having but they are still lot more out there who are suffering even worse than us.So, be positive and move forward and don't take simple things easy as sometimes it really benefits us.

Title: Confessions of a Shopaholic
Author:Sophie Kinsella

i read this book about many of time..this story are great and it is all about girls and most important is shopping..hehe because i also a shopaholic...i guess..hehe

this is the review of this book:

Rebecca Bloomwood just hit rock bottom. But she's never looked better....

Becky Bloomwood has a fabulous flat in London's trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season's must-haves. The only trouble is that she can't actually afford it—not any of it.

Her job writing at Successful Savings not only bores her to tears, it doesn't pay much at all. And lately Becky's been chased by dismal letters from Visa and the Endwich Bank—letters with large red sums she can't bear to read—and they're getting ever harder to ignore.

She tries cutting back; she even tries making more money. But none of her efforts succeeds. Becky's only consolation is to buy herself something ... just a little something....

Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life—and the lives of those around her—forever.

Sophie Kinsella has brilliantly tapped into our collective consumer conscience to deliver a novel of our times—and a heroine who grows stronger every time she weakens. Becky Bloomwood's hilarious schemes to pay back her debts are as endearing as they are desperate. Her "confessions" are the perfect pick-me-up when life is hanging in the (bank) balance.

Two Boys, Five Tons of Ice
-Readers Digest

"Can anybody hear me?" Like everyone else on the mountain that day, firefighter Terry Cushman could feel hope beginning to fade. The golden hour—those 60 precious minutes that give trauma victims the best chance of survival—had long since passed. It had now been three hours since the ice cave in Washington's Cascade mountains had collapsed, leaving two young hikers trapped beneath.

More than 80 search-and-rescue workers from five agencies covered the mountainside near Denny Creek. Using chain saws, shovels, and their bare hands, they had cleared away tons of ice, but tons more remained. So did unanswered questions: Would the victims have enough air to breathe? Would they drown in the rising waters or give in to hypothermia before rescuers reached them? Was it already too late?

Shoving all that aside, Cushman crawled into the shifting ice and yelled again, "Can anybody hear me?" Then he held his breath, straining to hear something—anything—from the frozen rubble below.

In this article, i know realise that everyone should have positive thinking and never give up before it is over. In this situation, the men are trying their best to save the trap people. They are really in hard time bat all they can do is the strenght to help those in need. Their hardworks hould be praised and at the same time we have to take that as examples.

True Friendship

Ever wondered what is the real essence of the saying "A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed"? People talk about the true value of friendship without knowing what it stands for. True friendship is when there are no formalities; when the person you are talking about is counted as family; when the relation you share reaches a stage that even if you don't correspond for sometime, your relationship remains intact. Best friends need not meet up often to make sure that the friendship remains constant. The trust between best friends is such that if one friend falls in trouble, the other will not think twice to help.

If the bond between two friends is strong, true friends can endure even long distances. They find a way of being in touch despite busy schedules. True friendship never fades away; in fact it grows better with time. True friends don't need a posh place to hang out. Their most precious hideout is each others' rooms! True friendship thrives on trust, inspiration and comfort. Best friends come to know when the other person is in trouble, merely by listening to their "Hello" over the phone.

True friends don't desert each other when there is trouble. They face it together and support each other even if it hurts the other individual's interest. Best friends don't analyze each other; they don't have to. They accept each other with their positive and negative qualities. Nothing is hidden between true friends; they know each other's strengths and weaknesses. Best friends don't stand any outsider commenting or criticizing their friendship and they can put up a very firm resistance if anyone does so.

True friends are not opportunists. They don't help because they have something to gain out of it. True friendship is selfless. Best friends support even when the whole world opposes you. It is not easy getting true friends and if you have even one true friend, consider yourself blessed. In this world of cynics and back stabbers, there are still some people who are worth being friends with.

read this, make me really miss my bestfriend which is yatie who is now taking nursing at kelantan.

11-year-old Survivor of Floodwaters Saves Her Family
-Readers Digest

Like most Oregonians, Stephanie McRae was used to driving in foul weather.

Although rain still pelted the windshield of her SUV, the worst of the day's storm seemed to have passed as she drove her 11-year-old daughter, Maddison, home from a church youth-group at 8:30 p.m.

Maddie rode up front, while two toddlers the McRaes are fostering sat strapped into their car seats in back. McRae, 39, turned her blue Ford Expedition onto South Prairie Road, where the family lives in rural Tillamook. Rounding a curve to cross over Fawcett Creek, McRae confronted a terrifying sight: The road just ahead had caved in and washed away. She slammed on the brakes. The SUV skidded into the gaping hole, plunged into the flooded culvert some 20 feet below, and was flushed into the creek, which the storm had turned into a raging river 100 feet wide. Rocks and downed tree branches smashed into the Ford, which flipped upside down. The pressure blew out the windows.
No one was hurt, but there was no way to escape either. The SUV was being swept toward the Tillamook River, barely a quarter mile away. McRae screamed helplessly into the night for her husband, Dan, and prayed aloud with Maddie: "Please, God, please, help us!"

The above is part of the article that I have read. After reading this article, I felt quite ashame of myself because this kid is only 11 years old but able to help his family in the time of emergency. It shows how high strenght he has and how active his thinking is because he was able to think during the time of emergency. So, why don't we as an adult act more mature, be more mature and look more mature so we can help those in need when they need our help.

Fast food

I have about this article on the internet. What is the fast food? It can categorize as a food that can eat before it be cook first. For example burger, hotdog, food in the cans and others. If it always taking, it can cause a diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, constipation, teeth problem and also heart attack. Time is the main factor why people more prefer buy fast food. Why fast food not good for health? Fast food contains additives. Additives are chemical substances which added in food and medicines with purpose to increase the quality of food, the taste is more delicious and for that food always looks fresh.
For me,fast food is not necessary in our daily life because it's have more effect to our body which is not good and if can, please avoid to having past food.

Just Me
By: I.Q. Cameron

There is yet another serial murderer in the town of Greenrock. Just a year after Detectives Tony Fisher and Dorothy Shank had to race against time as a ruthless, brutal killer murdered models in their town, someone is doing it again. But this time, the link between victims is not so easily defined.

The killer’s M.O. might be different, but the callousness with which victims are dispensed is terrifyingly similar, and Tony Fisher begins to question whether he and his partner shot the right man for the crimes the previous year. Questions about Officer Brad Holloway remain...

There are those who still blame Tony and Dorothy for Officer Holloway’s death. Worse, some even question whether the young man really was the dreaded killer of Greenrock. And if Holloway was did kill all those models, then who is responsible for the missing women and the dead bodies this time? As the casualties accumulate, the questions begin to resonate with horrifying, haunting clarity…

And again the detectives have no clues to go on. (Though you do, if you look closely!!!) Searching for the cold and prolific killer proves frustrating, and it soon becomes evident that both detectives have their own problems… and more importantly – their own dreaded secrets. All must tread carefully (even the reader), since all is not what it seems.

The reader will be left guessing to the very last pages in this compelling, gratifying novel. You can spend your time guessing who the next victim will be. You may try to guess what each key player has to hide. But to be certain, you will be given every chance to work out who the killer is - if you are watching carefully!

But for certain, no one can could ever predict the most amazing, most disturbing sting in the tail of this story!

Gratifying, gory and great! Brilliant!

Anger management
by: mayo clinic staff

Anger is a feeling of displeasure or hostility. It's a normal, healthy emotion, just like any other feeling you have.

Some anger management techniques he can practice include:

1.Self-talk to remind himself he's not in the military anymore and to keep himself aware of his reactions
2.Walking away from the situation until he calms down
3.Remembering to treat other people like he'd want to be treated
4.Agreeing to disagree, and leaving it at that

-A BLIND BOY-

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: 'I am blind, please help.' There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked,

'Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?'

The man said, 'I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.'

What he had written was: 'Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.'

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively.

Invite others towards good with wisdom. Live life with no excuse and love with no regrets. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.

Great men say, 'Life has to be an incessant process of repair and reconstruction, of discarding evil and developing goodness…. In the journey of life, if you want to travel without fear, you must have the ticket of a good conscience.'

The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling…

And even more beautiful is, knowing that you are the reason behind it....

i had read an article about Bad Habits Can Be Expensive and i want to share it here...

Bad habits can be very expensive to maintain. Never mind that to break bad habits is a difficult task plus they are annoying to others. Do not think about the pain you cause yourself, if you do not want to. Just remember that your bad habits are hitting you where it hurts-in your wallet.

Smoking has always been a bad habit to have. In past times, people smoked more cigarettes, but cigarettes were cheaper. Now, many people have cut down on the number of cigarettes they smoke per day. Yet, those few are more expensive now than the many were back then. That's accounting for inflation, too.

This is because lawmakers have seen fit to put large taxes on cigarettes. In many areas, the taxes are set to go up even higher. Some states are planning hikes of $10 per carton. If that will not stop you from smoking and break bad habits, what will?

Alcohol, too, is a bad habit that is subject to sin tax. It depends on how expensive your taste in alcohol is whether it will cost you more or less. Usually, most people will go to drinking less expensive alcohol as their dependency grows. However, it is not unusual for someone to go to a bar on a Friday night and spend their paycheck on alcohol.

Many people get into bad habits of taking prescription drugs when they have an injury, such as a back injury. They may be given muscle relaxants and strong pain relievers to get them through the first painful days. This is a reasonable medical response to their condition.

Yet, the medication helps them feel so good that they will want to get more. They may go back to the doctor to get more. If the doctor will not agree, they may go to different doctors to get different prescriptions. All these doctor visits and prescriptions usually come with a price tag. Then, when that no longer works, they will go to get their pain relief medications on the streets. It will cost even more to keep up their bad habits and all the more reason to break their bad habits.

Of course, people who have bad habits with illegal drugs probably have some of the most expensive bad habits of all. Whether it is cocaine, heroin, marijuana, or methamphetamine, there are no cheap drugs. At least, there will not be an unlimited supply of cheap drugs. If a person truly has a bad habit with one of these drugs, they will always want more until they quit. The cost can get to be astronomical.

Gambling can lead people into financial hardship. Some people can't break bad habits with gambling that they lose their houses and everything else they own. They may be in staggering debt on top of that. Now that there is online gambling, they cannot even get away from their bad habits by staying home.

Shopaholics spend money like there is no tomorrow. This bad habit can destroy a budget. It can take money away from things that need to be paid, like a mortgage or car payment.

It is clear that these bad habits are costly in the short run. Many of them are also costly over time, as health issues settle in. The cost of cigarettes is high, for example, but the cost of lung cancer is very much higher. Breaking these bad habits can only help your finances to get better.

Step1

Look for the best qualities of others and yourself. Take advantage of situations where you can exercise your best qualities and highlight those of others. Record your thoughts daily and review them to visualize what affects us and how. Schedule a window for quiet time each day.

Step2
Give others the same dignity that you would expect to receive. Recognize that status or income levels do not make the man nor determine his value. Take time to actually hear what others have to say instead of interjecting your own personal thoughts or simply not paying attention.

Step3
Become involved in what others have to say by asking sincere questions and waiting for an answer. This will enhance your relationships, allowing you to make positive contributions to a healthy friendship.

Step4
Provide assistance to others when needed, going out of your way if necessary. Acts of kindness are often met with reciprocal acts of kindness. You are further demonstrating how to be a better person and reaping the rewards from your efforts while making others feel special.

Step5
Empathize with others' plights or circumstances. Listening to your heart and following it instead of being judgmental contributes to your being a better person. Being honest in your dealings with others also promotes positive relationships. Problems arise when the truth is not spoken or twisted to suit one's motives. Choose your words carefully and precisely. Express yourself kindly.

Step6
Develop a set of standards and live by them. Don't allow others' viewpoints to alter your code of ethics. Maintaining your personal values during difficult times will help you to be a better person.

The Discovery of Global Warming

The Earth's climate is constantly changing. Many climatologists believe that the temperature of the Earth slowly fluctuates over time. In fact, several scientists estimate that between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago the Earth was covered by large sheets of ice. This period of time was known as the Ice Age. As the temperature of the Earth began to rise 7,000 years ago, the Ice Age came to an end.

Earthquake

An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes are recorded with a seismometer, also known as a seismograph. The moment magnitude of an earthquake is conventionally reported, or the related and mostly obsolete Richter magnitude, with magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes being mostly imperceptible and magnitude 7 causing serious damage over large areas. Intensity of shaking is measured on the modified Mercalli scale.

At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and sometimes displacing the ground. When a large earthquake epicenter is located offshore, the seabed sometimes suffers sufficient displacement to cause a tsunami. The shaking in earthquakes can also trigger landslides and occasionally volcanic activity.
