Salam and greetings!
It seems like yesterday when semester began, now it is the last week! So thank you for being my students, for your enthusiasm and 'readiness' to do all the things I ask of you. I hope you like being poets, I hope you remember your tenses and apply them in your writing. I hope you edit your writing all the time but most of all, I hope that while classes lasted, you had a good but educational time which brings me to this question.

So if you had learnt something, anything, what are they? Can you tell me ONE thing you learnt from English class that you'll remember FOREVER. It could be a word, it could be grammar related, it could be a skill, it could be non academic. It could be just anything! If it's more than ONE, hehe, even better! So share with me what you have learnt.

I'd also like to take this chance to apologize to anyone in case I stepped on your toes, said the wrong things, as it was never my intention to hurt anyone's feelings. and lastly, THANK YOU for being most cooperative and enthusiastic in class.

Dear students!
Welcome to Technical Writing aka UHL2322. If you haven't heard of me, or seen me before around campus, great! Sometimes it's nice to be a mystery and that makes us even. `Coz prior to this first class, you are all mysteries to me but as we go along, we'll peel every layer of onion skin, like Shrek (love Shrek!) and get to know the pages behind every cover. I hope the mixing of metaphors aren't confusing you; but isn't that exciting about learning English and all its little nuances?

Here are my expectations:
NUMBER ONE
It's easy to get an A in my class; but you have to deserve it. For example, when you do your presentation, and you are so well prepared that I can't even minus any points off you. You are facing the audience, interacting with them, your visual aids are gorgeous, your language flawless, your content and organization makes me speechless. Hey, you might even get an A. And if you do, you deserve it. That's how you get an A in my class.

NUMBER TWO
Cellphones are allowed but do keep them silent. Keep them in your room if we have exams.

NUMBER THREE
I am very fair, but I am not to be stepped on.

NUMBER FOUR
I dress up for class, I expect you to be in your best dress as well. I like having Posh Spices, Professional Spices, Geeky Spices but please keep your toilet slippers in the toilet where they belong. Let's not have any Toilet Spices, okay?

NUMBER FIVE
But most of all, open your minds, learn something new and have fun!

The Auditory/ Verbal Learning Style

You learn best when information is presented auditory in an oral language format. In a classroom setting, you benefit from listening to lecture and participating in group discussions. You also benefit from obtaining information from audio tape. When trying to remember something, you can often "hear" the way someone told you the information, or the way you previously repeated it out loud. You learn best when interacting with others in a listening/speaking exchange .

Strategies for the Auditory/ Verbal Learner:

Join a study group to assist you in learning course material. Or, work with a "study buddy" on an ongoing basis to review key information and prepare for exams.

When studying by yourself, talk out loud to aid recall. Get yourself in a room where you won't be bothering anyone and read your notes and textbook out loud.

Tape record your lectures. Use the 'pause' button to avoid taping irrelevant information. Use a tape recorder equipped with a 3-digit counter. At the beginning of each lecture, set your counter to '000.' If a concept discussed during lecture seems particularly confusing, glance at the counter number and jot it down in your notes. Later, you can fast forward to that number to review the material that confused you during lecture. Making use of a counter and pause button while tape recording allows you to avoid the tedious task of having to listen to hours and hours of lecture tape.

Use audio tapes such as commercial books on tape to aid recall. Or, create your own audio tapes by reading notes and textbook information into a tape recorder. When preparing for an exam, review the tapes on your car tape player or on a "Walkman" player whenever you can.

When learning mathematical or technical information, "talk your way" through the new information. State the problem in your own words. Reason through solutions to problems by talking out loud to yourself or with a study partner. To learn a sequence of steps, write them out in sentence form and read them out loud.

Finally, the time has come for you to have a go at the language software we have in our labs. For students who have yet to give it a try, you will soon. Get your username and password from your respective class representatives. Your username depends on the programme and section you are in, and the position you are on the attendance list. So say for example, you are taking UHL2312, from section P13, and you are the 3rd student on the name list, your username should be UHL2312P13S3. If you are S3, then your password is S3.

Please be careful logging in as the username and password are case sensitive. Do note that the username and password are in ALLCAPS or UPPERCASE.

Once in, please click on the chosen level, in this case, it's either Advanced+ or Business+. You can choose to do any one first. Then click on the green check button, then choose the FREE TO ROAM mode, then validate by clicking on the green check button again.

You have been given a Tell Me More assessment form for information on which activities to do, as well as to fill up once you have completed the activities. Remember you need to hand in this form once the allocated time for TELL ME MORE is complete. We advise you to finish all activities first before attempting to re-do any of the activities. Also bring your own headphones, as the headphones provided in the lab might not work.

If you are having problems with the PC, or the headphone and mic, please inform your lecturer so that your lecturer can report the problem to the lab manager. Or call our lab managers at 095492461.

Here are some troubleshooting advice:

1) If the PC you are using has a headphone that does not function, please do an activity that does not require the use of the headphone yet, e.g., Grammar Workshop. Grammar Workshop is the third icon after the HOME icon at the bottom left corner of your screen. Choose the relevant Grammar Workshop activity to do. Once done, trade PCs with a friend who has done the speaking and listening part.

2) Should you want to change PCs or go to another PC, please log out by clicking on 'change user account' instead of clicking on 'Quit TELL ME MORE'. If you simply quit the programme, chances are when you use the other PC, the remark that you are logged on on another PC will appear.

3) If at any time, the PC gets stuck, then you will need to turn it off and then on again. Same goes, if you can't get into TELL ME MORE, please restart the PC.

Dear all,
This is a note of welcome to usher the new semester and new students of UMP into the big, delightful world of UHL 2312 Technical English.

This is your first semester and the beginning of a new journey which you determine the end from the choices you make. I always ask my students the reason they come to UMP, whether voluntarily or simply because, they have no other choice. Use the four years wisely developing yourselves as this is YOUR journey of self discovery, where you discover your strengths, your interests, your skills, and so much more. Might even discover your future life partner here though I wouldn't put so much emphasis on that. :-)

That, is just a bonus. You won't die not having a boyfriend or girlfriend. And having one can either make or break you. Some people have successful constructive relationships where they inspire each other to excellence and some people have failed relationships, move on and learn from them, while others attempt at suicide.

As I said, it's during these four years you learn who you are and what you are made of. I hope UHL 2312 will have a hand in that process and help you develop yourself so you can bloom fully. Nobody can mistake a rose no matter what it's called.

Therefore it is my wish you enjoy yourself as much as you can while soaking in what UHL 2312 has to offer.

This semester, blogging is not compulsory because us UHL lecturers are not as heartless as we seem. We know your gripes including the internet access being unstable and all etc., etc., etc. So many of us decided not to make it compulsory to give way to the amount of writing you'll be doing and the invention you'll be inventing. Isn't that just very kind of us? I do however invite you to leave your comments whenever you feel like it. Treat it as an outlet to vent your frustration, show off or just to give your opinion and feedback on the activities we've done. First of all, thank you for being my students. It's been fun teaching you guys and really entertaining you watch you act out your everyday processes. Anyway, fun and games aside, I know some think the games are somewhat childish (and they are! You're really lucky we didn't play Simon Says, I'd have made you walk like ducks and jump like froggies), some may not even get why we did what we did, but throughout the semester, I hope you learnt something. It does not have to be 10 THINGS though that would so much BETTER and I would feel so BLESSED. It can just be one very significant something that is not necessarily academic.

So what have you learnt? It can be one thing or more. Please comment.

Finally, assignments are submitted, quizzes are done, presentations are over! Some of you have shown great improvement. I remember watching Asshahidallah presenting and he looked so different from his first presentation. I smiled at the difference. For those who are not so proficient yet you managed to memorize through practice - that impressed me too.

But guys, it's not enough to have 'cukup syarat' or the bare minimum. You need your audience to go back with more than a vague memory of what you have just presented. Some of you, though you learnt attention getter, didn't apply it in your presentations. Those who did really got the audience's attention. such as Amie's group. They started the presentation by highlighting memorable life experiences made the presentation more memorable. Amni's group made theirs memorable with the little sketch. And conclusion, that's important too. It's not enough to say "That's it folks!"

Anyway, mistakes are meant to make you better, so don't be afraid of making mistakes. The road to success is hard work but it's worth it. Some of you are halfway there and some of you are nearer. And guess what, you will plenty more opportunities to finetune what you have achieved so far. Remember a great presenter does not memorise, is not monotonous, is very passionate and is not trying to impress.

So next sem, what do you do? Remember and apply what you learnt this sem even it's just one thing. I always say POSITIVE anything is better than NEGATIVE nothing.

The week before Product Exhibition

Hi people!

It's now the last week before Presentation Week. Next week, on 27 and 29 Oct 2009, instead of going to class, please bring your goo selves the the lobby area of Block W. There you will see about 20 tables, choose one as your booth.

On 27 Oct 2009, there will be 2 sessions: 8:00 - 10:00 a.m and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. On Thursday 29 Oct 2009, there will only be one session, that is from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

However, to wrap things up, there will be a quick session from 4:00 - 4:30 p.m. All P01 and P02 students are required to attend. Attendance will be taken. We will utilise one of the classes at Block W.

Back to the Product Exhibition,uUse the first 20 minutes of class time to set up and decorate your booth. Remember to bring the mark sheets (1 per group)that have been distributed to you.

Presentations will begin either at 8:20 a.m. or 2:20 p.m. Attendance is compulsory and will be taken. Ideal presentation time is 4 minute per speaker and each presentation shouldn't be shorter than 3 minutes or longer than 5 minutes per speaker.

Be rest assured. Here are some FAQs to guide you through this.

Q1: God no! Does this mean I need to have my own blog? Lecehnye this subject....
A: No, dears, you don't need to have your own blog but if you want one, go right ahead, and create your own blog. I will even link your blog to mine. However for this course, all you need to do is to leave your comments in the right post. Meaning, if you are from P01, post in the entry that is meant for you, unless it's a common entry, like this one.

Q2: But if I don't have my own blog, how will I post?
A: If you don't have your blog, all you need to do is post as ANONYMOUS but you need to leave your details like name, and Matric no. Because this is part of your assessment, lecturers will need to know who said what. Even if you have your own blog and your username is Jack Dawson, you'll still need to leave your name and Matric number unless of course Jack Dawson is your real name.

Q3: How many comments do I have to make?
A: You can make as many comments as you want. But the average is 5 throughout the semester. That however, will give you the average mark. Do refer to the assessment scheme for blogging that I will be giving you soon.

Q4: Can I use text language?

A: Minumum a paragraph of at least 5 lines.

It's been six weeks...what I've learnt so far in UHL 2312 class - P02

It's been six weeks in UMP but 4 weeks of lessons/ learning 'coz we have to minus the first week and last week, our quarantine week. That's a setback but we'll make up for it. So here's a quick review of what we've done so far and what I'd like for you to tell me is what you've gotten from all the activities. If you got nothing, by all means, tell me also why the activity had no impact on you. After all, hehe, you can't teach an old dog new tricks, just kidding; I was going to say, it's not learning if people already know.

Okay, we did (1) SNOWBALL FIGHT, (2) RESEARCH on job requirement and opportunities, (3) Speed Talk and Board games, (4) TEAMBUILDING and MoU, (5) PRESENT - Steps to be an effective presenter (including the video clips you viewed), and (6) Train the Speaker.

Dear P02 students of mine!

Me, I've read this book by Mitch Albom entitled For One More Day. It's about a guy called Chick Benitto who comes from a dysfunctional family, and worships the ground his father walks on and blames mom when his father left. After a series of failures, he basically tried to kill himself - his biggest blow was when his daughter didn't invite him him to her wedding.

So he decides he's going to kill himself back where it all began, his hometown. In his bizarre attempt to end his life, the guy meets, of all people, his mom! His mom, who's been dead for years and he wasn't there for her. It was her birthday and he didn't turn up. Instead he was trying to rekindle his glory days but it didn't work out.

During this time he learns the truth about his parents' separation, and how he had wronged his mom and how much his mom loved him. Really, it was sad reading the parts where he retold all the times he didn't stand up for her, and how she stood up for him. Made me wonder myself what kind of daughter I am and was to my parents and they must have felt at that time. You know, we can't take back what we've done but we can always try to make up for it, and we must always show and tell our parents that we love them. Even as I write this, I am reminiscent of the impact it made on me and I feel unwanted tears welling in my eyes.

But I guess the point is that it goes both ways, imagine how Chick's mom must be feeling, that she'd failed him to a point that he's driven to take his own life...So did he die or not? If he didn't, how could he meet his mom? Or was it all a dream? Go get the book, it's worth your time, believe me.

Welcome to UHL 2312 Technical English. Our first class has been fun, I hope, getting to know each other and friends, as well as the subject.

UHL 2312 is really an interesting subject and you'll be learning so much although on paper it's mainly Presentation Skills, Technical description and Process explanation.

I say 'so much' because you'll also learn to work in a group, learn to be a leader, learn to communicate your ideas and so on. It is my great wish also, that you try to speak more English not only in the classroom but outside the classroom as well. I truly believe that this uni is a training ground for you to equip yourself with skills that make you marketable and in demand when you leave. This is really a place where you should find yourself and your strengths.

Dear all!
Next week will be the final week we shall be seeing each other formally. Remember that we'll be having our Innovative Product Exhibition at the foyer of the Sports Complex. It will be during class time and the first half hour is for you to set up your booth and practice. Those who are not presenting, please show your support by going to your friends' booth and ask them questions about their product. Attendance will be taken.

Groups presenting will also have to submit their project report and a scaled down copy of their poster on an A4 size paper.

The aim of the poster is to inform and attract your audience to your product. Your content should include a brief description of the product and benefits of having and using that product, who should use it and so on. It should also have an image/ picture of the product. Add also whatever information you think relevant.

Well good luck! We are all looking forward to seeing what your genius brains have invented and innovated. Remember, the best products will be showcased in July during the UMP Academic Carnival!

It's finally over. Gone are the headaches figuring out how to best present and compare contrast a product in a videoclip, how to insert sounds and convert files.

So, now that you are done, what do you think you have learnt? And when you look at your finished product, how do you you feel? In a few words describe yourself before and after the presentation.

Apart from that, I also would like to know if you think that what you learnt last semester help you this semester. If yes, in what aspects exactly and how much did of what you've learnt helped you this time? If no, why didn't they help you?

Hi, if you are in this class, CONGRATULATIONS! It means that you have passed UHL 2312.
Anyway, as explained in class, UHL 2322 is an extension of what UHL 2312 was. We expect you to apply whatever you learnt last semester this semester, especially when you present. Hence the reason why Presentation Skills were the very first thing you learnt in English class.

In your group, discuss possible companies you'd work for, google those companies and find out what qualities these companies require.
Are the requirements the same?
If yes, what requirements are similar?
If they differ, what aspects are different?
